Sandor's Visit (Feb 18-19, 2017)

At the Second Annual Rusczyk Games, the events were: Agnej, Wheelbarrow Relay, Air Mail, Destroyer, and I'm Puzzled: Is That Sunrise or Sunset?. The event took place at Richard and Vanessa's new house, which was pretty awesome. The kids had a fun time exploring the new location.

We also had a "battle of the sexes" escape room competition. Girls got crushed.

Banks' Visit (Nov 22-26, 2016)

The Banks came for a visit during Thanksgiving week. We spent a day at Universal Studios, tried out an escape room (which was a lot of fun), had a Thanksgiving feast, and went to the Corona Del Mar beach on Thanksgiving evening (which turned out to be a perfect time to go - we practically had the firepits to ourselves). On Black Friday, we went on a quick hike, and then split into two groups - the shopping group and the kayaking group. Andrew and Adam spent some time building stuff, necessitating a visit to the hardware store. All the kids (and adults) played lots of games, as usual.

Anya's Visit (Jun 1-2, 2016)

Masha and Anya stopped by for a short visit on their California/Nevada road trip. We went out to dinner, walked around Quail Hill, had frozen yogurt for lunch, and went to the Corona Del Mar beach. Oh yeah, and there was definitely some tea drinking, wine drinking, and talking.

Sandor's Visit (Feb 13-14, 2016)

Richard and Vanessa organized Rusczyk Games (also known as the Little Brats vs. Old Farts competition) in honor of the Lehoczky visit this year. The Games featured events such as Around the World, Aerial Ovoids, Battleship, The Long Walk, and Piece de Resistance. When we weren't being tortured by the game masters, we went out to eat at Elmer's favorite Chinese restaurant, and played some Werewolf. The next day, the whole crew came over to my parents' house in Carmel Valley, went on a hike in the canyon, and played some more Werewolf.

Banks' Visit (Nov 13-15, 2015)

The Banks were in town for a wedding, and stayed with us for a couple of nights. It was a short visit, but everyone was very happy to see each other as usual. The Bank kids found places to sleep in various Hung kids' rooms. We mostly stayed around the house, but we did find some time for a short hike on Saturday morning.

Sandor's Visit (Feb 16, 2015)

The Lehoczkys were in town again for President's Day weekend. This was our first time visiting Richard and Vanessa's new (interim) digs. We spent some time hanging around the house, hanging by the pool, and eating (of course). The main event, however, was the kids vs. adults soccer game at the nearby park. As expected, Richard went a little crazy. Also as expected, Allison was the first to cry.

Beebees' Visit (Aug 7, 2014)

The Beebees came over for a brief visit while on vacation in California. We went out to dinner, then just hung around the house. Sam and James enjoyed the ping pong machine, as well as some of the other toys they found lying around.

Anya's Visit (March 29-31, 2014)

We've visited Anya a couple of times over the years, but this was the first time she came to see us (and her first time in California)! Masha, Sasha, Anya, and Tonya drove down from the Bay Area to stay with us for the weekend. We spent most of Saturday at the Universal Studios (entertaining, but way too crowded), then drove back to Irvine for some dinner (and desert). On Sunday, we went to the beach, hiked around the neighborhood, and had a relaxing evening at home.

It was really great to catch up with old friends... hopefully, we can do it again soon!

Suratis' Visit (March 23-24, 2014)

Suratis were in town briefly on their way up north. The day they were here also happened to be the day much of the family was over to celebrate Michelle's birthday. We mostly stayed around the house, with brief excursions outside to ride some bikes/scooters/vehicles, and to fly a kite. As usual, there was plenty of good food to be had at the party.

Sandor's Visit (Feb 16-17, 2014)

We saw Rusczyks and Lehoczkys over the President's Day weekend in San Diego. Vanessa took us to see her super cool art show at the Mission Trails visitor center. We went hiking at Torrey Pines, and had lunch, dinner, and coffee at various establishments around town.

We spent another day visiting the farm. The kids engaged themselves in multiple rounds of capture-the-flag, eventually pulling the adults into the game as well. Sandor, Richard, and Elmer played the part of zombies.

Banks' Visit (July 1-6, 2013)

The Banks came for a visit again this summer, and as always, we had great fun hanging out together. We went to the beach a couple of times, including a visit to Crystal Cove and the tide pools. The kids got their fill of swimming in the ocean and playing in the sand.

We spent one day visiting Legoland and its various rides and attractions: cars, planes, boats, Miniland USA, lego car building, and so on. Before heading home, we stopped by my parents' place for dinner.

On July 4th, we went on a neighborhood hike, and hung out at the pool. Other activities throughout the week included going to dinner with Sylvia's friends, laser tag, and fishing at the Irvine Lake. All too soon, it was time to say goodbye.

Sandor's Visit (March 17, 2013)

We had another fun day at the Rusczyk farm, with the Lehoczkys in attendance. The kids engaged in their usual activities: playing board games, swimming in the pool, annoying the cats, eating, etc. Somewhere along the way, they also designed and laid out a race course around the property. After leading the adults on a tour of the course, they held several races in different age categories.

Sandor's Visit (March 17, 2012)

The Lehoczkys were in Alpine for one of their regular visits. Unfortunately, Allison got sick and had to stay home, but Elmer, Michelle, and Adam drove down to San Diego to see them. It was a rainy day outside, so most of the visiting took place indoors.

Sandor's Visit (Oct 10, 2010)

We spent another fun-filled day at the Rusczyk family farm. Sandor, Yalli, and the kids were all there, and this time, we got to meet Polaris. Allison loved the baby so much that she didn't want to leave her side for most of the day. The rest of the kids visited with the butterflies (we even saw one hatch!) and the chickens, went swimming in the pool, and played their share of board games. In the evening, we all went on a hike, and watched the sunset from atop some big rocks.

Joe and Sylvia's Visit (Nov 19-26, 2009)

The Bank family, in town for a wedding, stayed with us for a week leading up to Thanksgiving - and it was a blast! On several occasions, the Banks got dressed up and disappeared to attend various wedding-related functions. But most of the rest of the time, we got to enjoy their company. The kids played together inside the house, and out on the street. We played tennis and soccer at a local park. We went to the beach. And on one of the days, the whole crew (minus Michelle and Elmer) headed to Legoland, where we visited the aquarium, and went on a multitude of rides.

Our kids really enjoyed getting to know Andrew, Michelle, Peter, and Natalie, and were very sad to have to say goodbye.

Misha's Visit (April 18, 2009)

Ilona and Misha were staying with Natasha in San Diego this week, and the three of them stopped by for a short visit. Allison really enjoyed having Misha over; she was amazingly generous with her toys, and was almost acting like a caring and protective older sister. Michelle and Adam provided some energy and excitement, as usual.

Masha's Visit (April 3-5, 2008)

Masha and family came for a short visit over Dima's spring break. Dima was mostly interested in visiting the local skate parks, and Michelle was in school, but Adam and Sasha got to play together around the house. Luckily for Sasha, Adam had a whole bunch of pirate paraphernalia stashed away in his room.

On Friday afternoon, we all headed to Disneyland, for some quality stand-in-line and snack-till-you-drop time.

Sandor's Visit (Feb 17-18, 2008)

We stayed with Richard and Vanessa for a couple of days when the Lehoczkys were in town. When things got a bit crazy around the house (as they invariably did), we took the kids outside to run around and do some yardwork. Vanessa had tons of great activities lined up to entertain the kids, including a scavenger hunt. While the kids were scavenging, the adults got a chance to observe a real live nature show.

Other activities included hiking, jumproping, going out for lunch and ice cream, and climbing some rocks at the Viejas mall.

T.I.'s Visit (March 23-24, 2007)

Tatiana Ilyinichna was here with a couple of students, all the way from Ekaterinburg. Their tour of the U.S. started here in LA, and ended in New York a couple of weeks later. We spent a few hours together in Los Angeles, climbing the hill up to Griffith Observatory and catching each other up on the past 8 years worth of news. It was really great to hear about all the old friends, and the happenings at the old school.

The next day, the whole crew stopped briefly by our house on their way to visit other people and places.

Sandor's Visit (Oct 7-8, 2006)

Sandor and Yalli, and their ever-expanding family, were in San Diego over Veterans' Day weekend. Together with Richard and Vanessa, they drove up to Irvine for a visit. We stayed at the house on Saturday, catching up on everything but sleep. The kids had a blast playing together, both inside and out. Atlas did a great job of looking cute.

On Sunday, we ventured out for a trip to Crystal Cove. The kids played in the sand, waded into the ocean, and spent hours at the tide pools, fishing for crabs and other sea creatures.

Kevin and Cindy's Wedding (July 1-4, 2006)

We went to the Bay Area for Kevin and Cindy's wedding, and took the opportunity to visit some old friends and some of our favorite places. We visited Shige and Amy in Santa Cruz; the kids really enjoyed walking around the pier and the boardwalk. We took the kids to Muir Woods to see a redwood forest. We went to the Marine headlands for that unbelievable view.

Rajeev and Anubha's Wedding (May 27, 2006)

We went to Hartford, Connecticut for Rajeev and Anubha's wedding. The most exciting part of the trip was seeing Rajeev riding on a white horse up to Anubha's parents' house. (Unfortunately, the horse turned out to be extremely tame.) The wedding was beautiful, and it was fun catching up with old friends.

The day after the wedding, we drove to New York, and spent the rest of the Memorial Day weekend wandering around the Big City.

Bry's Visit (Feb 27-28, 2006)

Bryan and his friend Matthew stayed at our place as part of their bike-across-the-country adventure (thoroughly documented here). They arrived at the house soaking wet, having picked one of the few rainy days this year to visit San Diego. It was exciting to get a glimpse of their trials and tribulations; it made us feel a tiny part of the adventure.

Brian and Kelly's Visit (Nov 5-6, 2005)

The newlyweds came for a visit en route to a conference, which was held in San Diego. Hale and family came over on Saturday, and we had a nice cookout. Brian was supposed to be preparing for his talk, but instead (surprise!) stayed up to play some games with the rest of us.

I am not sure why, but my camera seems to always be taking a break when Kelly is around - maybe it's because she takes such good pictures. Thanks, Kelly!

Brian and Kelly's Wedding (Oct 12-16, 2005)

We flew to Boston for Brian and Kelly's wedding. It was a great trip, despite the miserable weather (it rained almost non-stop). Michelle was very excited to attend her very first wedding, and overall, the kids did pretty well (i.e., they didn't embarass us too much). Here are some pictures from the rehearsal dinner, the wedding ceremony, and the reception.

When we weren't busy doing things wedding-related, we took the opportunity to visit some of the familiar places, and see some old friends. We took the kids to the Children's Museum. We visited MIT's new computer science lab, and hung out at the Coop. We walked around Boston and Cambridge during the short breaks in the rain. Adam loved riding the subway, and taxis were once again a huge hit.

On Saturday, we headed over to Jim and Michelle's house, where we had a great time getting to know the O'Toole kids. We colored, painted, played games, and even went for a walk in the rain. Finally, on Sunday, we visited Rajeev and Anubha, who were kind enough to return home a day early just to see us.

Visiting Masha (Apr 2-5, 2005)

Masha has been staying home on maternity leave, so we went to visit her and the family (including the new baby) over spring break. Michelle and Adam really enjoyed hanging out with baby Sasha. We saw Dima occasionally (as his busy life permitted).

We didn't stray too far from the house most of the time - went to the nearby reservoir, a couple of playgrounds, that sort of thing.

Sandor's Visit (Feb 19-20, 2005)

Sandor and family were in town once again for the President's Day weekend. Everyone came out to our place on Saturday; it was rainy all weekend, so we spent most of the time indoors, although we did play outside a bit with the hover disc. We also visited the Birch Acquarium at Scripps.

At Richard and Vanessa's house on Sunday, the older kids made themselves some spacesuits out of paper, and Adam enjoyed chasing the cats. When it wasn't raining, we hung out by the fish pond. At the end of the day, we even managed to go for a hike.

Hale's Visit (Dec 18, 2004-Jan 1, 2005)

Hale and his family came all the way from London to stay with us for the holidays. We tried to take advantage of the nice San Diego weather while it held: hanging out at the beach, visiting the zoo, and playing frisbee with the master. There was also some last minute Christmas shopping, which necessitated visits to the mall.

The kids had a blast playing together inside the house, out on the street, and at the playground. At bedtime, they all piled into Michelle's room. The little kids took baths together (that is, until Calvin refused for fear of being bitten by Adam), and Calvin and Michelle even tried to squeeze into the same bed.

Christmas was a grand affair, complete with tons of presents for everyone, stockings for the little kids, and a train set which lasted all of 5 minutes (thanks to Adam). On New Year's eve, the kids enjoyed whacking away at a pinata which the Browns procured in Tijuana.

Visiting Jeff (July 28-Aug 2, 2004)

We went to San Francisco, and stayed with Jeff and Tara for a few days. The kids enjoyed hanging out in a new place and exploring their surroundings (Adam really liked the broom). We went to the park, rode a carousel, and visited Masha and family.

Brian's Visit (June 6-10, 2004)

Brian and Kelly came from Boston, and stayed with us for a few days. We all went hiking together at the Torrey Pines State Reserve. Brian and Kelly also did some other cool and touristy things, while we stayed home and/or worked.

Thanks to Brian and Kelly for most of these photos.

Masha's Visit (May 29-31, 2004)

Masha and Dima came to visit for the Memorial Day weekend. Dima got a little preview of what it's going to be like being a big brother. We also found out that there are some toys (like Adam's Ball Blast) which can be enjoyed equally well by 8, 3, and <1-year olds.

The weather was pretty nice, so we went to the beach on Saturday. We visited the zoo on Sunday (it was Adam's first time there, and he was very interested in looking at all the animals).

Ina's Visit (March 21, 2004)

Ina and family were in town during spring break, and stopped by for a brief visit. We took them hiking in the canyon next to our house. Michelle had fun hanging out with the big kids.

Sandor's Visit (Feb 14-16, 2004)

Sandor, Yalli, Orion, and Amadea were in town for the President's Day weekend. As is now a tradition, we all got together at Richard's house. Orion and Michelle had great fun terrorizing the cats inside the house, and the fish out in the pond. The guests also did some yard and maintenance work, including a gardening effort by the three year olds.

On subsequent days, we all met up again at our house (Michelle played a good host and showed Orion her room), and at the Wild Animal Park. Some of the highlights at the Park: climbing the rhinoceros, eating lunch, walking and playing, feeding the deer, hanging with gorillas and pelicans, eating ice cream, and saying goodbye.

Visiting Masha (June 6-8, 2003)

We went to visit Masha, Vova, and Dima for a weekend in June. We spent the Saturday having a picnic at a local park; Jeff and Tara joined us as well. Michelle stayed very busy playing with her sharks and rocks, and gathering flowers.

On Sunday, we hung around the house, and went out to eat and play.

Sandor's Visit (Feb 13-18, 2003)

Sandor, Yalli, and Orion came to stay with Richard and Vanessa for the President's Day weekend. Michelle finally got a chance to meet Orion (who definitely proved to be the more sociable of the two). We got together at Richard's house on Friday night, and again on Saturday, when the entire gang stopped by our house after visiting the zoo.

Masha's Visit (Aug 30-Sept 2, 2002)

Masha, Vova, and Dima drove down from the Bay Area to visit us on Labor Day weekend. It turned out to be the hottest weekend of the summer. We went to the beach a few times, to swim it off. We went looking for crabs in the La Jolla tide pools. And we spent quite a bit of time in the comfort of our air-conditioned house.

The more adventurous of us (Dima, Vova, and Elmer) also went hiking in the canyon next to our house, looking for bugs and various other critters.

Chris and Rebecca's Wedding (March 31, 2001)

Chris and Rebecca got married in Livermore. They say it was a beautiful ceremony. Some of us didn't get to see it, though - 3-week-old Michelle decided it was time to eat just as the bride started walking down the isle. Here are some pictures from the reception, however.

A few of the Atlanta folks came to town for the wedding, including baby Calvin, who came to visit us at home and made some not-so-subtle attempts at pawing Michelle.

Stouf's Visit (July 22-23, 2000)

Stouf visited the Bay Area, bringing together the local Huntsville crowd for one weekend in July. On Saturday, we drove around the area with Stouf, Chris Bishop, and Rebecca, visiting Half Moon Bay and San Francisco. On Sunday, all of us, plus John Chen, joined Malik and Phyllis for their weekly game of volleyball at the Stanford oval.
