Winter 2021 (Dec 2020 - Feb 2021)

We got a Christmas tree early this year, and opened presents throughout the winter break. Michelle came home before New Year's, and stayed for the month of January before going back to Boston. It was a quiet break, with some puzzles, a few visits to the beach, and some zooming with grandparents. Allison finally completed her black cat macaron project, and Adam continued to make skateboards.

Pixel got many unsolicited hugs, played and explored, got plenty of rest, and became obsessed with my laptop. And here are some miscellaneous pictures from this period.

Fall 2020 (Sep-Nov, 2020)

School started remotely this year, and even though in-person options became available in the fall, both Adam and Allison chose to stay home at first. Adam dedicated quite a bit of time to college applications, but also found time to work on several maker projects, including an electric skateboard. Allison was happy to spend more time with Pixel. Just as she was about to go back to school, the poor guy hurt himself and had to have surgery. Recuperating involved wearing a collar, being contained to a single room, no running or jumping, and lots of rest. Eventually, Pixel graduated to walking around the house again, though he wasn't allowed on the stairs for several more weeks.

In other developments, Allison spent a lot of time baking macarons, Halloween was very uneventful this year, and Michelle sent some photos of her hiking excursions in New England.

Summer 2020 (Jun-Aug, 2020)

The pandemic continues... This summer, we tried to entertain ourselves around the house: we put together puzzles and played board games, Allison did a lot of baking, Adam constructed skateboarding ramps, boats, and surfboards, and Michelle made some more wall art. Allison "attended" remote MathPath. We saw family in the backyard with our masks on. Allison and I went rollerblading at UCI once, and we occasionally went to the beach. We tried out several leashes for Pixel so he could explore the outdoors. We showered the cat with lots of affection and fed him a little too much.

For her birthday, Allison made her own ice cream cake, which took weeks to eat. We celebrated with the grandparents in the backyard, then played some Rock Band back in the house. And here are some miscellaneous pictures from this period.

Spring 2020 (Mar-May, 2020)

High school tennis season started as usual this year, and Allison managed to squeeze in an appearance at the Math Field Day. Then, in mid-March, Covid-19 shut down businesses and schools, and everything came grinding to a halt. Michelle flew home and started painting her walls. We did puzzles and played games, went on hikes, went biking and rollerblading. We made and donated face shields to local hospitals. Allison did a lot of baking and a little bit of cooking, and Adam made ravioli from scratch. We zoomed with friends and family. Michelle tried her hand at hairdressing and sunbathed in the front yard, Allison and I went for a walk at Crystal Cove, and Adam went chasing after bioluminescence. And poor Pixel got a lot more than he bargained for with five people at home 24/7 to bother him.

Winter 2020 (Dec 2019 - Feb 2020)

Allison really enjoyed performing in the theater production at school; all those long practices paid off, and it turned out to be a great show, and the most fun she's had all year. Over the winter break, we got together with some friends, and Adam and his crew went on a weekend trip to Big Bear. Michelle spent a quiet week at home, saw a couple of classmates, and made friends with Pixel.

Pixel continued to be the center of attention. He explored his new cat tree, continued being fascinated by water, and played with many new toys (and some old ones too). Pixel celebrated the holidays with us, helped Allison with homework, and did a lot of exploring, lounging, and (usually involuntary) cuddling. And here are some miscellaneous pictures from this period, both with and without Pixel.

Pixel (Dec 3-20, 2019)

Allison finally wore us down: the weekend after Thanksgiving, we headed down to a local pet shelter and adopted a kitten. A few days later, we brought Pixel home. He took over Michelle's room and lost no time in investigating his new surroundings: the scratching post, the tunnels, his carrier, the laundry hamper, the bookshelves, and Allison's chair. Over the course of the next couple of weeks, he continued to settle in. He played with us and his many new toys, explored different areas of the house, then tired himself out and slept, sometimes right on top of people's laptops. And he got hugged and kissed and cuddled a whole lot.

Fall 2019 (Sep-Nov, 2019)

Allison started middle school this year; the first order of business was a week-long class trip to Catalina. After school, she participated in the competitive robotics program, and went to several robotics competitions. Adam also tried something new this year - he played water polo on his high school team.

The obligatory Halloween pictures are here, and so are some other miscellaneous pictures from this period.

Summer 2019 (Jun-Aug, 2019)

As the school year came to a close, Adam attended spring sports awards with the rest of his tennis team. Allison finished up elementary school this year, the last in line to graduate from Turtle Rock. She marked the occasion by cutting off her long hair, probably losing a few pounds in the process. Then there was the traditional pool party for the 6th graders. As this was the year Michelle's APAAS class graduated from high school, we threw a reunion party for them at the beach. It was great to see all the kids, the parents, and the siblings, catch up, swim, play some football and spikeball, and finish up with the s'mores. We even brought a big screen and a projector, and watched the slide show Mr. Ivey had put together six years ago for their class.

Allison participated in a couple more musical theater productions, The Greatest Showman and Alladin. She also tried out junior lifeguards this year, and enjoyed the experience. And here are some miscellaneous pictures from this period.

Spring 2019 (Mar-May, 2019)

Allison has wanted to try out musical theater for a while now, and she finally got a chance to participate in a production of Mary Poppins. She also was a host in the school's talent show this year. In science, Allison's project did well at the Orange County fair, and moved on to the state level fair. Other happenings in sixth grade included an annual jog-a-thon, a bike trip to the Back Bay, Roman Day, and lots of singing. It's been a very busy year, but we did get a chance to get together with some old friends over Memorial Day.

For Adam, spring meant the tennis team and AP exams (sometimes happening at the same time - not ideal, to put it mildly). This year, he mostly played doubles. The team did incredibly well, making it to CIF in division 1, and ultimately winning the CIF championship.

Winter 2019 (Dec 2018 - Feb 2019)

Allison's sixth grade year entailed many group projects, an elegant luncheon, caroling at a retirement home, Mathcounts, district science fair, outdoor ed, and an open house. Adam had a brief stint singing in the barbershop at his high school.

Michelle came home for the winter break, and saw some of her old friends. Allison got together with some of her friends over the break as well. We also had a Christmas party at the house, with most of the family attending.

Laguna Beach continued to change and surprise throughout the winter season.
